School Profile

Walsingham House School was founded pre-independence, in 1940, by Mrs. Tree. During that time, it catered to the children of expatriates and government officials who were posted in India. In 1944 it was bought over by Mrs. Adcock. Previously located at Breach Candy, in 1953 the School moved to the Kutch Castle, which is presently located on L.J Road (Nepean Sea Road). In 1955 the School became fully recognized by the educational authorities; students appeared for Senior Cambridge and Secondary School Certificate (S.S.C.) examinations. Fifteen years later, the School changed hands and reigns were passed on to the Mittal Trust. Since then the School does not accept any donations or capitation fees. Currently, Walsingham is registered as an I.C.S.E. School with approximately 1,500 students and 103 faculty and staff members. While management and educational boards changed over the decades, the School maintained its founder’s vision.

Walsingham has three sections – Kindergarten (Nursery, K.G. & Prep), Junior (Std. I to IV) and Senior (Std. V to X), all housed under one roof but on different levels. Being a former palace, our students have the opportunity to closely witness the illustrious history of India. Due to the structural design our girls benefit from airy balconies, spacious terraces and large halls, which provide them with ample space to play. Special laboratories for Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Computers, a Library, a Counselling Cell, an Infirmary, a Basketball and Badminton court, Table Tennis equipment and Visual and Performing Art rooms are facilities present on our premises. We are also affiliated with Priyadarshini Park and Sports Complex, which is where our Annual Athletic Meet is held.

At the Kindergarten level children begin to explore themselves, as well as the world around them, through experimentation and the playway method. In the Junior School, they are introduced to a variety of disciplines, where the focus is on understanding concepts and critical thinking. Finally, during Senior School, students are taught to integrate the information that they have learnt in a coherent manner, analyze it and draw meaningful conclusions. Each pupil is encouraged to discover her interest and true potential.

Along with academics, we offer a range of extra-curricular activities including various sports and cultural options. Basketball, Football, Badminton, Athletics, Karate, Dance, Dramatics, Debates and Elocution are a few to mention. We provide our students with the opportunity to compete at the House, School, District, State and even National level. In order to further the educational experience, our students are also sent on excursions in India, e.g. Cochin, Ooty etc., as well as abroad, e.g. Singapore, Egypt etc. One of the more interesting programmes that we offer to our Std. IX & X girls is a space camp to NASA. Additionally, School life is often enriched by interaction with prominent figures from various walks of life. These guests provide motivation to our students and prove to be exemplary role models for them.

Faculty and Staff

Our qualified faculty members take special care to constantly reinvent their class work, develop teaching aids and foster an open minded attitude to enhance learning. While our student-teacher ratio in Kindergarten is 30:2 and approximately 40:1 at the higher levels, the School and its faculty realize that personalized attention is of utmost importance. We conduct proficiency classes in groups of 10 for students that might require extra help after School hours. Our faculty is involved in pedagogical research and use international standards of teaching within the classroom. Thanks to our dedicated teaching staff, Walsingham functions as a family. The nurturing attitude of our teachers is what sets them apart. In keeping with our motto, In Felicitate Laboramus, which means in happiness we work, we expect all students to enjoy the educational experience with us and grow into fine young ladies.
